Alloy welding and low stack headset questions

Issue:





- Need to somehow install a relatively short threaded 1 1/4 steerer into a 1 1/4 frame.
- It's a teeny bit short as per the pic. There isn't enough thread to run a 1 1/4 threaded headset (both Funk frames headtubes are too long).

Options:

1) Investigate using a lower cup super low stack 1 1/4 modern aheadset that may give me enough room to run a headset lockring

2) source a pro alloy welder to have a go at extending the steerer.

Any ideas?

Going to sound stupid but are you sure the steerer is alloy? Funk often used steel or titanium steerer press-fitted into their alloy forks as you couldn’t use alloy steerer with threaded headsets/stems as the increased wall thickness needed for alloy meant the stem had to be smaller (ie a 1 1/8” quill stem rather than a 1 1/4”)

If it is steel then it should make having it cut-and-shut with a longer steerer easier. If it is alloy then another option is to have a machining company cut the whole steerer off and then have a steel on pressed in and pinned

Its not a Funk fork - but I like your thinking. I am pretty sure the steerer is actually alloy but I'll get a magnet on it tonight....

My best guess, if you are going for a low stack headset, is one of the latest CK no logo versions with a grip nut top.

I would add an 3rd option as well:

- Find a new fork / swap for one with longer steerer.

Fork will never ever, ever, ever come up - this is the closest will get after 5 years of keeping eyes peeled.

How long is the steerer and how long is the head tube?

Check that it’s not an alloy ahead steerer that’s been threaded, that wouldn’t be good! Check the wall thickness, if it’s more than a couple mm then it’s likely an ahead steerer, and you may struggle to get you 1 1/4” stem in.

This is a press fit funk fork steerer to give you some ideas!

For short stack XT was always the go to in 1/4” certainly lower than the levin you’ve got there or a King. You can even have the top cap and lock nut shaved a bit to save a couple extra mm

Looks like it's possible with a CK with grip nut, but hard to tell without measurements. I guess it's necessary with at least 25 mm of free steerer

On that frame have you though about having the head tube heavily faced to remove 5 mm on the top?

On second views that looks like a ring of epoxy between the race seat and the steerer on your fork, stronger evidence for a pressfit steel/Ti steerer I say!
