Alivio canti brake springs

I have just cleaned up a full set of alivio cantilever brakes that were covered in 28 years worth of mud and grime and only just discovered that the springs are in two different colours.

There are 2 gold and 2 silver.

Does the rear use the gold ones and the front use the silver or vice versa?

Do each set use 1 silver and 1 gold and if so which side do they go.

Please can anyone help.

They are off of a 1995 Specialized Rockhopper.

Silver and gold per pair...

Someone with more knowledge will tell you which side, last time I did it, it was trial and error.

The colors differentiate left vs right. You can discern which side by the direction of the coil. The spring coil should tighten as the lever pivots toward the wheel.

Doh ! Yes of course !

The gold one goes on the left rear and right front and the silver one on the right rear and left front.

Was trying to work that out, but I was too shattered to get there... 8 hours of tyre fitting had me beat!
