Airborne 2000 Lucky Strike DB Rebuild

* Adjusted the hubs now the skewers are torqued (I had backed them off).
* Fitted and adjusted all pads – who said v's were easier then cantilevers ? :?
* Fitted the brake boosters.
* Adjusted the headset and then torqued the stem up (Locked the front brake on with a tie wrap).
* Fitted crank and torqued it up.
* Removed the bolt to get it anodised black.

When I removed the bolt, it had damaged its thread a bit ? :? Thankfully the bottom bracket (crank ) thread is OK, still another £11 for a crank bolt though … :-( Better finding it now though then it cocking removal up at some point in the future ... :D

More coming soon :D

It will still be a week or so ...

Rampage is making me a few finishing touches

I need to train every night this week (other than Friday) for my grading on Saturday. With a little one at home it would be unfair of me to finsh the bike on Sunday :-(

The best I can hope for this week is - chain sizing, front mech fitting, head badge fitting and to start messing with the cables ... :-(

WD :D

* Chain shortened accordingly.

* Stuck the head badge on. I used a strong double sided :

I positioned the badge using masking tape for alignment and only used the central sticky tape so it was easy to align. The long bits were removed secondly as everything was pressed into place :

It seems to have stuck well, hopefully it wont fall off … :?

I decided that the bottom bracket spindle thread must be slightly miss formed as it had had a go at chewing its second bolt up :?

* Sourced a correctly sized tap and cleaned out the thread :

Its fair to say the axle thread is very hard …

* I sent a few bits to Rampage / Intrincycle to anodise (also with some bits / spares for the Marin and the Fat) along with some 7075 bar :

After Rampage had worked his magic :

The 7075 bar was converted into these, some for the Marin, some for the Airborne, some for the Fat (oversize), spares and one for Cherrybomb :

They are for the USE posts, they are my custom design to :

A) Replace lost / missing / hard to source (correctly sized) items.
B) Stop the pin moving rewards and the front bolt head touching / damaging the finish on the front of the post.
C)Add a bit of bling

They look really nice assembled and fit well (this is on the bear valley) :

Equal spacing from top of post to both front and back bolts :

Really pleased with the result

* The crank bolt went black and matt silver, just to be a bit different :

* Fitted crank bolt – the thread felt nice this time :D

Fitted it from the back / through the axle to stop the ano getting damaged on the front face, torque wrench in reverse ;-)

* Drew up some pedal washers to suit the XTR pedal / crank option, again in the the black and matt silver finish (made by Rampage) :

They are designed to fit in the recess on the crank arm help to protect the finish :

* Anodising mounting holes sealed with black vinyl dots :

* Found the XTR adjusters and Goodridge housings don’t fit together to well :-? The housing doesn't bottom in the hole because of the flare. I was a bit concerned it might decide to partially collapse and seat itself fully just when I didn’t want it to so a couple of custom stainless washers (made by Rampage) will stop that happening :

* Adjusted rear mech travel.

* Started on the V brake noodles.

I found that the avid noodles bend nicer than the Shimano offerings. I didn't want avid on them though, thinners didn't touch the logo and paint stripper removed everything including the black – it was painted and not anodised ! (Now re anodised by Rampage). Shimano and Avid use a different seal but I found that the avid seal will fit inside the Shimano seal giving a dual seal and actually fitting the noodle better than either offering fitted by themselves.

* I found some more bolts on the duel control levers that could be replaced with Ti :

There are still a few 'odd' bolts on the bike that I cant get in Ti though :?

Mini disaster alert …

Bike in front room, resting on end of couch.

Jess :

Who is as thick as pig sh1t tries to ride the bike …

Handle bars flip through 90, bike hits the wall, dual controls meet wall, bike slides down the wall, two marks down the wall, two screwed (brand new) dual controls …

Anyhow, this is what the inside of a dual control looks like whilst its partly stripped ready for repaint …

At least the paint may come in useful for future repairs …

And Jess is now behind bars for her sins …

Not been a great week for bike stuff, all three have had problems, sh1t happens …

More coming soon :D

Fingers crossed this is going to match ...

If it doesn't, the cats getting a new paint job in a slightly off shade of xtr grey ...

Re:

I have quite a good XTR colour in an aerosol I could have leant you!
Spent hours at a paint company once going through all of their colours!

You should be getting some sleep whilst you can ... ! Hope all is going well

I am hoping the paint will be cool, it's a custom mix (surposedly) matched to the right shade and gloss level based on the actual parts I stripped off, we shall see ... Fingers crossed ... :D

Re:

Doh!

You should introduce your cat to our dog.

Sounds like they'd get on like a house on fire. The number of times he's knocked one of the bikes on top of him as he's walked past.

Re:

Who is this 'rampage' you speak of? Could he help me create some custom bushes?
really like the finish on the USE seat components. Every update is worth the wait!
