aheadset in '92?

Since the headtubes crack the most I would not be changing the headset. Not worth the risk of adding any stress in that area.

I'm pretty sure as a 17 year old I bought a 91/2 gt rts 2 that came with the aforementioned tioga avenger, if was it alchemy headset. I found this in a box the other day as it goes, though missing.g the lower bearing race.

Threadless didn't come in until around 1995.

I dunno, by 1994 they were all over the mid-high end bikes. My '94 Avanti Ridge Rider had a dia-compe aheadset.

would a deep-cup headset help spread loads better in that region?

i would say the exact opposite.

like others have said i'd stick with the headset currently fitted, would it really be worth the potentiality of cracking the headtube just to save a few grams ?

keep the original cups in place but exchange the the threaded top part of the headset for aheadset parts. I've done this loads of times when short of aheadsets, many parts are compatible with even the seals fitting perfectly.

lots of experimentation and a box of old aheadset parts help.

i used the manitou as a commuter bike to work today. i was 5 minutes earlier as with my normal bike (zaskar le) it was a super stiff ride, the best bike i ever rode!!!!

however, with every noise i heard, i was thinking it was goining to crack (i checked at my work, no cracks)

i think it will be a garage queen, i guess i can never have a relaxing ride again

aheadset

1990 according to http://mombat.org/Suspension.htm

Doug Bradbury build the first Manitou fork with 1.5" of travel using elastomer springs. Weight is under 3 pounds. This fork used 1 1/8" stanchions and sells for $400. Regular forks use standard 100mm spacing while the Manitou bike versions get 115mm spacing. AheadSet threadless headsets become available.
