Could anyone tell me a good front mech to buy for my Kula 1996,(recently bought and very nice !).It is 31.8 tube , bottom pull. I have an xt fitted but I think it only suitable for 42 tooth outer and I am running 44 tooth outer . Ideally any suggestions for one that doesnt rattle like this and a previous stx one that I had ! Many thanks ,in anticipation of the knowledge out there !!

which front mech to buy

my xt seems to either be high enough to push on to the 44 outer, but in doing so wont drop on to granny cog . If i lower the the mech it will drop on to granny but not shift up to 44.

just sounds like a bad setup to me.

if the mech is sitting too high it should still engage granny, the chain will just rub the brace that sits across the rear of the cage, if the mech is too low then the cage will catch the outer ring.

someone was having that problem on our ride at he weekend would have had a go fixing it but needed to ride.
(that was a modern deore mech on a suntour xc pro MD chainset. )
Got any pictures ?

Try unscrewing both limiters a bit, if you raise and lower the mech the cable needs re-tensioning.

44 and 42 tooth are both compact spec chainrings.
Either some alignment issue, the shifters not shifting properly

I had a weird one recently. Similar symptoms but not sure if it's the same cause? Turns out the mech I'd set aside for the frame was meant for a seat tube with a more slack angle. When mounted the front edge of the mech was close to the chainrings but the trailing edge was quite some distance away, it seemed to drag in nearly all gears.
When I fitted another more suitable mech it followed the curve of the rings perfectly.

Yeah, I am starting to hear about seat tube angles a lot these days when it comes to fitting front derailleurs. I never seem to remember this problem with early nineties bikes.

Hang on though these other mechs, the dropped clamp design, is it because of them ?
