I just bought a pair of Mani2 forks off a member & the thread down the steerer tube isn't long enough.I've rang around all my local bike shops & no one has the correct tool to thread it with Ie 1 1/8 steerer thread cutter.

I then went to a few engineering & fabricating workshops none of them had the correct tool .One said that he could do it but he'd have to remove the steerer tube from the crown in order to get it to fit on the lathe properly.

Is the steerer meant to be removed? Can anyone help?

Yup, you can take the Crown/steerer off the legs no problem. There will be 4 bolts holding them on, simply undo and pull apart.

any decent framebuilder, and most not decent ones, should have a fork threading tool

Frame builders...

Good advice to ring up a frame builders ,but, unfortunatley they can do nothing! Bob Jacksons said that because the steerer was unremovable from the crown you wouldnt be able to fit it on a lathe. it is also unlikely that a die could be run down the steerer tube to extend the thread. He said because of the various heat treating processes to strenghten the steel would make it impossible & would result in the destruction of the die !! :( :(

Sorry not very clear there ..I meant remove the steerer tube from the crown.

crikey, had Mani 2 crown thread extended by mend-a-bike, effie road fulham for a fiver yonks back. . . .
And if your machinest has a lathe big ehough, fitting the fork in should be no prob. But its a faff, so expect £20+ because of the set up. . .
