Advice on steerer tube length.

Otherwise it looks like this. i.e. bloody ridiculous and whoever did this should be shot.

By the Cycling Fashion Police, apparently. Who may want to explain why a Possession Of An Overly Tall Steerer is a crime... but not a quill stem, although the geometry will be the same.

But really it shouldn't normally be anything more than say 25mm at the most, since you should fit a better stem for looks. The headtube is that length for a reason.

...Which is to fit an average rider, according the the fashionable fit of the time. But fit changes with riding style and some people have non-average needs which are hard to meet with easily available stems.

That stack is 45mm
A normal quill does not extend very far until it hits max, from memory 25mm/1" is about the Max extension from quills and most bike setups would be run with very little extension, the 20mm is breather room for somebody not wanting the drop.

That is the basis for the opinion.

As for that bike the forks are already too long from the original design, it's sat in a big big chain combo and the modern crap that is strapped to it is another level of crime. Luckily the crime of- over use of so called purple (or more pink as it was bitd) or in fact just use of purple was avoided.

It should also be noted by anyone that has been here long enough to know their bikes, that is not a modern frame so has no relevance to bikes in this section and the setups would be. That is from a quill stem era.

Re:

Pics added. I will obviously need to chop off some steerer, as aside from anything else (no fashion police here btw) it will look rubbish with a stack of spacers on top of the stem, I usually have one, but any more will be silly.

I don't think it is that bad as it stands, but the proof will be in the riding, but in order to do that, I need to do some cutting (and fit the gear cables when they arrive).
