Advice on hybrids

I know its a retro bike forum, but I wonder if anyone could give advice on a new hybrid bike for around £1000. I was looking at the Scott Sportster P1 but I would love other peoples comments.

Get a touring bike, it'll be much more satisfying than some stupid hybrid thing.

How about a Hewitt Cheviot?

Seems an odd choice of bike to spend a LOT of money on?

I mean with specific types of bikes, I can see the sense in spending mucho money, if you're semi-serious about it - but a compromise type of bike?

a friend spent a fair amount on a Boardman hybrid .
nice bike , but now he is more into cycling it is not good enough .

you might be better off with a cyclo x .

Seconded: for mostly road use, with a bit of offroad - get a 'cross bike
for mostly offroad - get a mountainbike, even if it is a 29er.
