Abandoned bikes - what are the laws?

I wonder if in some of the larger cycle towns if this is a business waiting to happen?

Contact local council... They undoubtedly would privatise it out rather than collect themselves.. Then establish a business selling recycled/refurbished bikes

New business for some one?

I have often thought that when buying stuff from there :? but considering that sainsburys dont care if the money they take comes from drugs etc. Then equally I dont really care where the bargains come from,I would not KNOWINGLY buy stuff if it was dodgy, but if I dont know,I dont do any soul searching about it........

Probably quite a handy attitude to have as an Antiques dealer, but I hear where your coming from.

Buying on Ebay in some cases can cause me concerns about whether the seller owns the item legitimately but at least you can show traceability of the transaction and have some degree of buying in good faith. Tricky situation really.

I have a friend who researched this situation a while ago:

If you find an item, not locked/secured and obviously abandonned, take it to the local Police station and report it as 'found property'.

The Police will do checks to see if its stolen or known lost property AND if the bike is not deemed 'valuable' you have the option of retaining the item yourself OR claiming the item after one month if the owner does not appear.

The only down side to this is that you then become reponsible for any come back from the original owner if they suddenly reappear.

I do feel sorry for abandoned bikes, but at the same time, can't help checking out if there are any decent bits worth pinching !

There's an abandoned MTB near where I work with pink anodised cantilever brakes and levers. If anyone's building up a pink retro bike, I'll let you know where it is ;)

was in London today and seems to be loads of bikes locked to railings and bike parks with large bits missing. do they ever get removed?

There are plenty of opportunities for the small time entrpeneur in towns, I got my unemployed and dreamless ex son in law in the past to do a deal with Tesco's and Sainsbuys by rescuing all the knicked and abandoned shoping trolleys where they could be found, hosing them down and returning them to the shops. No vehicle used, just wheel them down the road, the knackered ones sitting in the ok ones. The reason is, those trolleys retail at about £250 a go, so an obvious loss to shops. Someone else I knew also did a mobile shoping trolley repair service, fixing castors that had been bent, you know those trolleys with a mind of their own in shops, is caused by out of true castors.

Also, when I was in Denmark and low on cash, I did what a lot of the local skinties did, scour bushes and public areas for Calsberg beer bottles so I could take them back to the supermarket and get the money on them, often to buy beer, but the system works, we used to do it in this country, but now we don't and so have crap everywhere.

Me, I got my activity, it does not provide money, but provides the materials I need for my jewellery work, material that is otherwise unobtainable these days except for I believe one supplier who charges loads due to the now specialist nature of the stuff. The bi product is, I am cleaning the enviroment of discarded waste.

I had a Scott Pergatory Dumped outside the front of my house which i left there for 2 days, then put it in my garage. I then phoned the police to say i had retrieved this bike and asked if it was reported stollen etc. It haddn't so i said i would keep it in my garage and they could call me if anyone came in to report it missing. They told me if it wasn't claimed withing i think 4-6 weeks it was mine! Nobody claimed it so i gave it to my brother.
