A Hustler, a Stiffee, 2 Handjobs and the elusive G Spot (Cove content)

So, shock update for the G Spot. I managed to find a seal kit from Canada and I’m going to attempt to fix the 5th Element myself. Fingers crossed. Never worked on a shock before.

But… as a back up I found this Cane Creek Double Barrel on eBay and managed to get it for £55. Seems to be what I need. It was listed as 200mm and that seems about right but no stroke was mentioned. A rough measurement with the spring on seems to be 50mm so I may have just lucked out.

That’s if it works. But then again it has a TF Tuned sticker and they look like they still service them so… maybe I can send it to them for a quick repair if needed.

They still sold the Double Barrel until recently so lots of places do them, and the seal kit for the 5th is the same as the Manitou Swinger 6 and both use standard sized o-rings that are still used in other shocks today. My mate down at Sprung Suspension in the FOD did the Swinger on my Rotec last year so if you end up needing support I'm sure they'd sort you out with servicing the 5th.

Let’s throw a Stiffee in to the mix!

I picked this up off Facebook for £50. Well. I picked a Cove Stiffee with a mix of random parts up. It had the Bomber, FSA headset, RaceFace stem and bars, Easton seatpost and X Lite collar but the rest was a random mix off parts.

They’re all gone now and I’m building it up as a 1x9 and might use it as a bit of a jumper. Maybe. At 36 I still haven’t learnt to jump. Or wheelie….

Maybe this will be the motivation. 😂. Just waiting on the Hope Mono Mini brakes to come.

Apparently I didn’t post a finished Stiffee…

Despite it being a small frame it actually feels pretty big thanks to the Bomber and ‘long’ stem. First ride was pretty terrible because I didn’t properly reset the pistons so I was basically riding with the front brake on for 8 miles or so but I’ve put new discs and pads on now and it’s grand.

G Spot update is I finally bit the bullet and bought a new shock. The 5th element is seized up and I’m struggling with that so I grabbed this essentially half price new shock from Germany. It arrived yesterday so… now it’s on. It actually feels kind of nice on the drive. Dead plush. I’ll take it down the Forest of Dean next weekend to see how it actually handles though.

Fingers crossed!
