Retro Newbie
Hi there.. long-time reader.. first time poster etc..

Two questions..

1.. I have a '97 Specialized Rockhopper A1 FS which I'm looking to replace the seatpost on.. I can't see any markings on the post and a bit reluctant to rely on my measuring - anyone know the size by any chance?

2. My bike is in a Dark Teal paintjob with silver red and yellow graphics.. all in a matt metallic finish.. all the same bikes I saw at the time came either in white or a light blue.. anyone else got the Dark Teal (green!0 version?

Seatpost is 30.9 and just to confuse matters my 97 A1 FS is Red

Cool.. cheers dude.. I assume they're all the same size accross the range?

Red? was yours a standard A1 FS or one of the higher models.. (I think I paid about £600 for mine and it ended up being shipped in from Canada!).. was yours fitted with Indy C's?

Always the same size as far as i know, never heard of any other diameter.
Mine is just the standard model and came with Manitou Spyder forks.

What post are you thinking of getting? Still got the original Specialized one on mine along with original Ritchey wheels, saddle, stem and shifters

Didn't the Spyder forks come on the 98 models? I'm pretty sure the '97 was Indy C only..

Actually.. I'm not sure to be honest.. I changed the bar and stem but want to change them again.. the original post is just wearing out a bit.. particularly the clamp..

I replaced the Indy Cs with some Judy J2s..

It still rides great! I'm amazed but I'm still on the original wheels!

Got me thinking now, will check the serial number, hopefully it will be the same as my M2 Stumpjumper (that is definitely a 199:cool: and start with the year of manufacture.

I have a silver Ritchey post and a black specialized post if you need one, both are cut to about 300mm though.

If you want a decent post for not much cash perhaps give the Smica Post Moderne a go, they come in 30.9.
Got a Thomson on my M5 S-works and to be honest can't tell the difference

Just had a look on Bikepedia and I'm sure yours is a '98.. mine's listed on there but I suspect the different colours were region specific as the only UK ones I saw were white.. I'll sory a piccie out on here at some point..

Cheers for the offer of the seat-tube.. I'll check the length mine is (oo-err matron).. and give you a heads up if I'm interested if that's ok?

I have to admit I'm debating a new bike at the mo.. but I'm fairly sure Specialized extended their frame warranty to lifetime on my bike (or I could just be imagining that..).. so the other option is to give it a new build and make it 8 or 9 speed...

The thing is.. I still love the colour.. (it looks kinda like dark metallic green and orange when you look at it.. like so much by the bloke in the shop I bought it from he put it out on display in the middle of the shop while he was waiting for me to collect it and had his works jeep done in the same colours)

Sooo.. I'm gonna ask a potentially dumb question here... can I convert my bike from 7 to 8 or 9 speed? I appreciate it will mean new shifters etc... and new wheels.. but is the frame spacing the same?

Frame spacing is same, here's mine in its guise as work/pub bike with 8 speed transmission apart from 9 speed chainrings.
