why not just leave the OG paint?
I'll have a before and after pics.
All of the paint was scratched, the decals were lifting and just generally not in good condition. I rode it but it's good that it was a flat street ride. Every nut, bolt, bearing etc will be cleaned, and replaced if necessary.
I have nothing to do, I'm semi retired with a lot of time on my hands. I make custom made pens but with more than 700 in stock I think I have enough for this summer season. Though there are some wooden ones I need to replenish.

RST 171 forks.
Yeah they are low end, don't care. It is what I have . But I cannot get the springs/ lower pistons? out. Pic one shows the plastic sleeve holding everything in. Pic 2 is the furthest I can pull the spring up, with the shock tube screwed onto it, then unscrewed.
The reason here is that when I took the bottom screw out water poured out. I'd like to service the inner workings but the upper plastic sleeve is stopping disassembly. Even with a sharp jerk on the attached tube/spring/ "piston" that uppersleeve does not move,
I don't want to pour solvent down there as I don't know what the lower components consist of.
The top of the spring extends too far to get any type of puller in there below the sleeve and there are no detents that make it seem like it is screwed in.
Any ideas?

So after a dozen emails to RST and Risseracing , no documents on them,I can conclude that there are no rubber parts in the lower end, Plug it and dish soap is all I can imagine to do. Air chuck and a thorough dry time then imma pour a lil Marvel in there, re grease the spring with a dowel and call it good.
I thought about Acetone but chickened out. good enuf for me.

I had a 96 RTS 3 back new with a pair of 171 forks. I distinctly remember being told they aren’t serviceable when mine died very early on and was promptly replaced by a 381DH (also terrible).

Thank you for the info. While they still seem to function I really have no idea what that function is. I mean they compress and spring back so I guess they are good....enough lol. As I said earlier in this post it is a flat street rider for me. Whoever ends up with it after I am gone can do what they like with it.
Getting close to paint now.
On another note the Noleen shock is going back for a rebuild. I have one of those needle/gauge tool and when I went to poke it in to relieve the pressure, the stopper valve pushed right into the cavity...Grrrrr. Assembly now looks to be a month away. Which is fine, it is -10 F with the windchill, not riding out there anytime soon.
