'96 Kona Lava Dome - Single Speed Conversion.

nice....i have a 95 cindercone, and despite it being lower end than some of my other kit i absoleutly love it!......it punches way above its weight!....enjoy!!!

Examining the bike the frame & forks are pretty good, all straight and true with only a few bits of rust and scrapes here & there. Nothing to worry about, just adds to the patina in my opinion.

Bad bits would include the transmission. Gear cluster & chain rings are pretty worn as is the chain. New cables required and 'least one cantilever spring will need looking at as it no longer springs.

Once these are renewed and with some spit'n polish she should look great.

Current plan is to single speed it so I can use it for the World Single Speed MTB event in the Ballyhoura Mountains this coming August.
Thinking it might be the most cost effective option for now but we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the positive comments Guys, I'll keep ye updated on progress.

The missus has one of these, which has been stored for 11 years and has just recently seen daylight and mud for the first time in ages....will try and get pics up.

Brilliant little bike. Get rid of the grip shift for some thumbies and it would be even better in my opinion!

Love that orange colour, classic

Hi All,

I have to replace the headset, amongst other things, can ye recommend a replacement item?
Something readily available from CRC or somewhere similar would be ideal.
The headsets from my LBS wouldn't suit unfortunately.

Thanks!

Some progress on the bike.

Have it stripped and accessed the frame. All seems straight but there are a few old scratches & chips in the paint. Decals are all sound so a respray ain't needed.
Besides, resprays ain't free whereas patina is.

I'll have a lash at touching up a few spots, if anyone has any paint codes/info of a close match I'd appreciate it.

The bike came with the original Scratch'n Sniff tyres.
Unfortunately the sidewalls were completely perished despite there been very little wear upon the thread.

They'd probably be fine for general pootling about but as the bike's purpose is to take part in the Single-Speed World Contest in a months time I hope to be doing a little more than just pootling about, 'least as far as my pitiful abilities allows.

The rear tyre's sidewalls pretty much disintegrated just taking them off the rim so it was wise not to rely upon them.

Anyways, as I'm single-speeding the bike its originality is not a consideration.
Replacement rubber are Conti Vertical's, 26 x 2.3 size.
