Hi

i've got a '94 cinder cone. Going to do a long race and the p2's wont cut hack it (or better put my wrists won't).

so i want to replace the forks with suspension forks. Any ideas what the max travel would be before buggering the geometry?

cheers

depending on how sloppy you want the front end, I wouldnt push it over 80mm myself, others may say otherwise though.

...also depends upon the terrain you'll be riding; BiTD there wasn't the mania for the gnarly stuff that fashion dictates we should be throwing ourselves off today so the forks were more about comfort than technical, long travel, performance.

Myself, I don't have the slightest inclination to try and emulate Martyn Ashton every time I throw a leg over one of my bikes, hence 80-100mm is more than enough... ;)

As for b*ggering up the geometry, I really don't think you'd notice much difference (and if you did all you'd need would be a shorter stem...).

Quick close the can of worms :D

I've got a 94 lava dome which is the same frame as yours, running a 80mm reba at the moment and it handles ok. Didn't feel very good at 100mm either.

Here's what a 1993 frame looks like, when fitted with Z2's... (63mm of travel? 65mm? :?)

It does lift the front of the frame up a little bit, but I don't think it looks too bad. Certainly doesn't ruin the handling.

one question dvatcmark

the rebas for bosses for v´s or are you running disks. the options seem few among the newer forks for v brakes.

My rebas have both canti bosses and disc tab. at the moment I'm running discs front and back, I've got an onza disc mount on the rear.

this is my 'for riding' retro,i had v brakes on it for a bit but prefer the power and reliability of discs when I'm riding steep stuff :D

I run 1996 Judy DHs on my 96 cindercone and it handles great.
I think you need to run old skool ATC length forks on the older frames, a modern 80mm fork will be longer than the originals with equivalent travel
Cheers
