Picked this up from here in January. Total bargain, stripped bare and in boxes. I've just got around to a quick dry build before paint (it came with a full GilM decal set)

So what do we think? The race lite moniker has been there since its sale in '91 and it apparently came with a few parts that don't tally with the '91 date; namely a kona branded Ti saddle, the sugino cranks, a twin bolt O-beam post, maximum/reaction tyres and TB forks.
Previous owner tells me they all came with the bike and it was a special edition? I have found another on Facebook that was once owned by ringo on here?

I've said it before but I'll say it again - that was a total bargain you got there mate. Those tyres alone are worth more than you paid for the lot!

That's lovely ;)

I had the same year Lavadome in black a couple of years ago, it's the bike that brought me here. Wish I'd kept that one as it was near perfect condition.

First time I've seen race lite on a 91 cinder cone. I thought it came in the 93 /94 era when weight was the commercial hook.

Re:

I have a Joe Murray kona from 92. Also got a race light Kona fire mountain from 94, 95. Race light Kona weren't around in 91

I've always thought "Race Lite" was one of Kona's trademark descriptors used across the line as a "catch phrase", not something that differentiated models. I may be completely full of baloney though :)

Cheers, Ted

Re:

It's nice bike. Shame about those decals but I guess it's too be expected for the age.

Post some pictures when you've worked on it. Always like to see a retro kona brought back to is former glory

Re:

Nope, nothing to do with the tube set at all. In later years it indicated whether the bike was a hard tail (catalogue spec) or not.

It's double butted chromoly. The special edition factor is the colour and that's it.
