91 and before Marin stems and riser bars (can you fit)?

Hello bit of help needed I got a marin muirwoods 91 with original stem and the handle bars have been sawed down to buggery Ive seen a few pics of old Marins with risers on them and want to know if this is an easy fit and how far I can go with the rise 1 2 3 inch 40mm whatever really I dont want to put flat bars back on but dont want to waste cash on risers inch or 2 would be great so has anyone messed around before like this and come up with a conclusion ?

Yes, they can fit (I even got drop bars to go).

The trick is:
1 fit the clamp bolt the from the back,
2 slot a 1p into the clamping gap
3 wind the bolt in a little to open up the clamp while you thread the bars in.
4 refit the bolt correctly and tighten.

I've put risers on my '91 Eldridge and my '93 Palisades without any trouble. As long as you twist the bars as you fit them you should be ok.

The only thing to note is the reach of the stem, my palisades had a 150mm reach and i think it looked odd so i fitted a 130mm reach today and it looks ok.
