Crazy. 8 is still the highest I run, and I am happy. I think the only thing that will eventually push me to 9 is when 8 speed cassettes start bing priced with a "vintage" mark up.
I shift on those 8 with six speed shifters set to friction mode--XT thumbies and Dura Ace downtubers. They both pull more than enough cable, even the Dura Ace. I am certain they could manage 9 speeds, probably 10 with a little modification.
To me this means that Shimano had a shifter in 1987 that was capable of shifting modern cassette ranges. And they just have been adding a click every few years...
