89 Pine Mountain needs new cassette

Greetings and Happy New Year to one and all.

I'm new here, but not new to making and breaking bikes, though its been quite a while.

I'm still using and abusing my 89 Marin Pine Mountain - its my only bike now. I've had it since new, when it came in light grey with neon orange forks and bars/stem, Deore bits all over, Biopace oval chainset and bottom bracket U brake.
Many moons ago I had the rear brake changed to cantilever ( fed up with mud clogging the U brake and stopping the rear wheel ). The frame was also painted purple and the bars swapped for X-lite something or other.

I recently conceded that the drive train needed replacing after standing on the pedals and having the chain fly off the middle chainring, which isn't good for the meat 'n' 2 veg I must say. Replacing the clapped-out Biopace chainset was easy enough.

However, 5 of the 7 rear cassette sprockets are now also unable to keep a grip on the chain under pressure :(

So, does anyone know if today's 7-speed Hyperglide cassette will fit the old girl, or am I looking at a replacement rear hub/wheel?

Many thanks for any assistance.

i would have said 'yes' But once the techno weenies get on here all will be cleared up :D

Post a pic up. I had an 89 pine mountain...mine came with cantis though. Was yours a direct import or are you sure it's not an 88 bought in 89?

Paint scheme sounds right for an 89 though - is the "marin" and "pine mountain" text in flouro orange as well?

Maybe they did a switch part way through the year?

Ebay still turns up 7 speed HG casettes. An 8 speed cassette will mount on the hub and should work fine. ...just be careful you may have little clearance between the smallest sprocket and your chain / seat-stays

Go for an 8 - that way you can use the "extra" click on your deore thumbshifters.

Not sure about 9 - after my time :)...but I don't like the 9 speed stuff compared to the 8 / 7.

Don't forget to replace your chain as well.

If it's a 7 speed then an 8 speed cassette won't fit unless you swap the freehub body to an 8 speed one. 8 and 9 speed have the same freehub size but a 7 freehub will be too small.

Depends on the type of cassette as well, is it a hyperglide or a uniglide? SJScycles normally stock the 7 speeds and they do appear on ebay from time to time (or indeed in halfords!).

Edit: here's all you need to know about cassettes etc (Sheldons great!)

Thanks for your replies.

Its currently a 7 speed cassette of some sort, definitely a Shimano freehub. I'll try and ID it - means I'll have to clean it now :(

7 speed is fine for me, there's an Evans just up the road that sells 7 speed Hyperglide cassettes for about 15 quid.

I can't remember what colour the decals were... Age is cruel. One day I might graduate to suspension forks.

EDIT: just reading the Sheldon thing - cool stuff.
