Ok, some of you may have read the various posts I’ve put up recently regarding my desire to own a late ‘80’s SM Cannondale. If not, here they are;

Late eighties Cannondale
18" 1987 or '88 Cannondale SM900 frame or whatever

Anyway I bought RAFbikes’ old SM500 frame, forks & stem which arrived in the post on Monday (thanks Staf :D ) and according to Vintage Cannondale the frame was built on the 4th March 1987 (26 years ago this month) and even better it was made by someone called “RH” (see drop out stamp).

Paint wise, I’m planning on going with the “hot pink” but with a twist. However, finding the original Imron colour code is proving to be quite a challenge but I’ve made some progress with DuPont which Brian at Vintage Cannondale will be posting some time soon plus I have a colour chip on its way to him which I hope is close to his old SM800.

I like the idea of the “custom graphics” that Cannondale offered on the ’87 & ’88 lines but I’m pretty underwhelmed by what I’ve seen on the web, so I started looking for images that epitomised the 1980’s. My initial thoughts were graffiti but my artistic skills are not up to that (although I think it would look pretty cool)! I then came across some Keith Haring images on Pintrest which galvanised my idea… Kieth Haring

I’m thinking that I can use a paint pen to apply the motifs and then lacquer over them for protection. What do you think? Doc3.jpg

I'd thought about trying to use an airbrush but I don't fancy the monumental masking job! I could go with a paintbrush i.e. as if Keith Haring had actually painted the bike but I think a paint pen would come out a little better.

Can't wait to see more of this. One of my top 5 bikes I think :cool:

I had the same idea on a c'dale frame a few years ago.
I keep an eye on the evolution :D
