86 Raleigh competition, all original?

Retro Newbie
Obviously new here, so hi everyone.
Recently bought above bike with 501 tubing from the original owner who told me that he bought it new and hardly used it over the years, he also said that every single part was original including tyres, inner tubes, brake blocks and cables. I have no reason to doubt him and he struck me as very pleasant and genuine.
Photos are what is needed but have no idea how to, only on android and not teccy at all, also completely new to bikes. Just bought it as I liked the idea of originality. Any help appreciated.

Nice find, I'd personally keep it original if the fit is good. You can't go wrong with a lugged steel frame and an old Raleigh is an iconic thing. I've never personally ridden road bike with 501 tubing but if my old Raleigh 501 tubed MTB is anything to go by it'll be a good balance between of strong and lightweight.

It certainly looks pretty much original although it's slightly different to the picture and the spec sheet in this 1986 catalogue. The differences could be down to the catalogue not being 1986 or your bike being a different year or Raleigh making things up as they went along.
Have you confirmed the year from the frame number under the bottom bracket?

Mark.

Thanks for the replies, have posted some more pics including frame no. The tyres don't seem to have a makers mark they just say made in Thailand, so are they replaced at a later date? Any idea as to numbers produced?

It wouldn't be the first time Raleigh changed the specs after printing the catalogue. I own a couple of 1984 Competition 12's, made just a few months apart. The oldest has the Weinmann brakes as per the catalogue, the newer one Shimano 600. I am pretty sure both came like that from the factory.

Lovely looks to be pretty original apart from the tyres which is to be expected, these are quite rare frames being made from 501sl which was only about for a couple of years.

Nice couple of machines & must have been quite attached to that model
