80's Campag Super Record BB Options?

Hi All,

I have early 80's Campagnolo cranks, I'm looking to replace the BB soon but am I right in saying this era of cranks don't fit what would be considered a standard square taper BB now?

What is my best option? I've got a 68mm BB shell so assuming English thread.

Also can I use any generic crank extractor on these arms?

'68-SS' or '68-SS-120 (+1.0, +1.5)' for the 'small bump' crancksets (1977-1987). These axles are 114-114.5mm from end to end.

'68-SS-120' for the 1958-1977 'big bump' cranksets. These axles are approx. 112mm total length. 1977 can be either.

Extensive info on the different qualities/types here.

Yes, the crank extractor needed for such a Campagnolo crankset is the 'standard' one from the era.

You need the correct thread campag extractor and a 14mm thin walled socket to get the nut off the spindle......an Icetoolz pedal spanner / 14mm socket is what I use instead of paying the insane price for a campag "peanut butter" spanner.

The 120 BTW on the cranks is not the lenght in mm........you need 113-114mm IIRC

Cheers guys! So am I right in saying I'd need to piece a new one together or look for a NOS one, no one makes them new any more or offers an updated version?

Any idea's if this would fit?

I think I understand most things on my bike now but BB's still confuse the hell out of me!

You don't necessarily need a new one, many good used ones out there. Might you not find one, I have a NOS Campagnolo Gran Sport for £35 if you'd be interested.

P.S. the Royce is too short.

Yep, plenty of correct era bottom brackets out there, On reflection it's 112mm pre 1978 the length. Assymetrical as the drive side needs to be longer.

OK thanks guys, btw my cranks have allen key type bolts so I'm guessing will be dead easy to remove/no special sockets etc!

I'm not too worried about having one from the correct era tbh, ideally was looking for something a little special/upgraded. Perhaps I'll just take out the one I have and see what it is (no marks of note visible from the outside), then maybe service that instead, given that I know it fits fine and there isn't actually anything wrong with it!

Wait a minute. If they have allen keys they are probably not early 1980's and not Super Record unless you are referring to the allen key dust cap. You probably need a different, symmetrical axle then...

Could you post a picture of your crankset so that we can properly advise you?

Here you go :)

the rear mech has the year on it (pat.83 from memory) and though I've forgotten it all now I did date the crank using the shape/number on the back of the arm and came up with early to mid 80's, anyway hopefully the pics help

They're after-market bolts, possibly self extracting types which will mean less tools required. I've no idea if they work well or not as I never tried them.

As your cranks are from the 80s you will need the 114/115mm asymmetric bottom bracket as stated by Gazelleer. If you can't find a reasonable price/condition Campag one then other Italian ones from the same era like Ofmega, Omas, Miche, Gipiemme etc. will fit too.

Mark.
