700C wheels in a 27" frame

flash

Retrobike Rider
I have a frame built around 27 x 1" tyres and no clearance for anything wider. I'm thinking of trying to fit 700C wheels so I can get a better choice of tyre. It'll be fixed, so I'll only need to worry about altering the front brake. Has anyone done it? Can you please post some pics, I just want to make sure it doesn't look too weird before I start spending (more) money.

Re:

Here is my Falcon 531 set up as a inclement weather / winter fixed steed, originally 27" but 700c fitted now. Looks fine and rides well. Needed long reach brakes (greater than 57MM) which meant super long reach cheapo DPB which are OK but not brilliant. Good job it is a fixed really!

Re:

The difference in radius between 27 and 700 is only 4mm, so if it's built for 27s with tight clearances then it might take a 700 with a normal brake.

Put a 700 wheel into the forks and see what it looks like.

My Witcomb. It was designed for mudguards so had big clearances to start with on 27".

and here with mudguards in winter mode...

Thanks. OK, I'm pretty sure I have a rather nice pair of track wheels in the attic of doom. Definitely worth experimenting.....watch this space

Re:

It can work fine, you just need enough depth on the brakes. I’ve done it a couple of times and Tektro do some super-long drop dual pivot brakes, they also do them in either nutted or recessed fittings. They’re pretty good if you swap out the pads for some Swissstops.

The Tektros I used are R559. Excellent brakes all told. I haven't found the pads to be too bad at all, although I'm sure that some snazzy aftermarket ones would be better than the stock ones.

Thank you for the info, however I want to keep the parts age specific. I'm hoping there's enough room to move the pads on the ones fitted....

Re:

I did just that. Used some Mafac centre pulls to get the deeper drop at the front. Fixed so no idea at the back.
