6 to 7 speed question

Hi there,

Currently got a 6 speed 126mm space rear wheel with screw in freewheel Regina ore cassette (Ofmega hubs I think - campy low flange copies)

Might be a stupid question, but can I easily replace this with a 7 speed freehub?

If the above is yes, then will the chain I've got for the 6 speed also work with 7?

Thanks,

Dru.

The chain won't work, you need a narrower chain unless you are running a compact 6.

Whne you say freehub, do you mean freewheel? The answer should be yes. However your 6-speed rear mech may not be able to sweep the full width, and your frame may not have the flat part on the RHS stays to give the last couple of mm of chain clearance. It's very much suck it and see. Probably you will get away with it. You might need a new rear mech if its teeth are too fat.

Generally you'll get away with the mech in my experience, the limit screws normally have enough adjustment. The flat on the chainstay is generally the issue and I've had to respace and redish the wheel in the past to get it to work. Not a particularly hard job. As hamster said it is a bit of pot luck, get a 7 speed freewheel and try it, you could get lucky....
