5 speed chain line

Hi,
About to put a 5 speed Dawes together, and was unsure of the bottom bracket axle length.
So, a 46t single front will be used and obviously a 5 speed freewheel.
My question is which cog of the rear 5 should see the chain in a straight line.

Any valued advice would be welcome and excellent :-)

Cheers
Richard.

Re:

Chainline should go to the middle sprocket of the rear cluster - easy with a 5 speed cluster.

This means the chainline in the other sprockets either side does not have to go too far off the perfect chainline.

Hi Johnsqual,
That makes perfect sense. many thanks for your reply :-)
I have various axle lengths to try with

Many thanks again,

Richard

Is it a cottered axle / chainset?

Shaun

Hi Shaun.
The cranks that came off were cottered, but I'm replacing with a steel single square tapered set, bought cheaply from the Bay as it's just a tidy up and a run around :-)
I couldn't remove the cotter pins (even with drilling) so they were cut free with a angle grinder. As I have several spare square taper axles, decided to do away with the cottered effect :-)

Cheers,

Richard.

Ah! then aim for the middle cog of five as described above :) Cottered axles generally stuck out a mile and even with the best will in the world often lined up with the second smallest!

Cheers
