Wondering if anyone's successfully fitted a 48T single-speed chainset to a mid 80's Raleigh Record Sprint?

Can't foresee any major issues with that, provided the BB spindle is an appropriate length; a Record Sprint (and similar Raleigh 501-tubed frames) is exactly the sort of bike that's often raw material for a "fixed" conversion so someone out there's undoubtedly tried it.

Not to that specific model, but I have just fitted an MTB 110BCD chainset to a Raleigh tourer. The rationale is that it's a cheap, strong, light and versatile configuration: perfect for a 48t ring, although 39 suits me better set up as a 1x6. The principle is the same for single speed.

The BB spindle length is the thing to get right: what you need depends on which chainset you use. Old MTB triples usually work with a spindle around 122mm. So when running them with a single, 113mm is a pretty good bet. If you go down this route you'd also need a set of shorter chainring bolts easily available on t'Bay.
