I don't have any images, I'm just going on memories of 40+ years, but Sheldon's link below might make good reading
Even with the cable your seller has, its unlikely it was on a child's bike, so the cable will need shortening and the stop resoldering

That's a shame. The brakes on my grifter BITD suffered because of the steel rims. Mind you,they were probably useless compared to vbrakes anyway. I remember the brake blocks had a leather strip in them as well!

SJS and Practical Cycles carry axles.
Check the age of your hub (datecode stamped on the shell) as this will tell you whether it is an older one which takes oil, or a later one which needs grease. The oil-lubed ones effectively last forever.

good shout - i did spot that on Sheldons comprehensive guide!
i'll see what ive got once i pick it up later
shame about the axle no-swap. hopefully i can piece it all together. the fact that the MX20 has gears does concern me that it the rear dropouts may be too wide...

Got the wheel.the rim is immaculate, the hub is in very good condition (on the outside).
The hub has the oil filler cap. I'll get some pictures up tomorrow and will confirm its age and axle length
Wheel and hub cost £5, plus the chap was friendly enough. Think he's a good source for this type of stuff.

the code stamped on the hub reads: '82 1'
which i presume to mean January 1982
rotating the wheel and holding the axle - it feels dry and rough, so not sure whats going to need replacing once i crack this open. wont be doing that though until i get my garage!
will be gathering data on servicing (Sheldon brown) and finding good parts sources like SJS cycles etc...
the axle length by the looks of it is 5 3/4" which is approx 146mm. we'll see if there is room to get this in the dropouts of the Ridgeback....
