2x8 or 1x9 - any preference, and why?

I've had some time for googling today, and from what I've read it's possible to use 9 speed sram shifters (the ones designed for sram mechs) with 10 speed shimano rear mechs (the ones with a clutch mechanism). Some people say it works with no mods, some use a small spacer at the cable clamp bolt to alter the cable pull slightly.

Either way, it looks like a good way to set up a 1x9 drivetrain with gripshifts and a clutch rear mech.

Anyone done it?

No but plenty of people on Singletrack have with good results.

Seen any bargains on clutch mechs?

Re:

Re:

Not read it all but 28T is a granny ring.
And no they don't have to be in two tooth increments, that's why you can buy odd number teeth.

The retro long cage rear mechs should be able to push 34T. Old DX didn't have a problem bitd on 7sp doing that when converted to 8sp setups by a big 34 or a screw on additional 11T

Yup, that's pretty clear.

NW chainrings absolutely do have to be in 2 tooth increments. You absolutely cannot get them in odd sizes.
