I have a pair of 26 TPI forks and wanted to have alloy cartridge headsets for them.
So I made a tap from another Raleigh fork and mounted on a lathe cross-slide and ran it through some alloy headset parts (24 TPI). I set the feed to 26 TPI and the thread form is pretty good, I'm going to use this method with confidence.
I can get cheap aluminium sealed bearing headsets for around (the equivalent of)15 GBP, postage to the UK will run me a bit, so I'm thinking 35GBP for one, 30 for more than one. Other headsets will do, as long as they are aluminium; you'll have to supply or point.
I don't know how many the tap will do...
