26" single speed wheelset

Hi

I found an old 26"we GT frame in the garage. It'll look lovely after being sand blasted and resprayed.

Thinking of setting up as a single speed.

Can anyone recommend a suitable wheelset? Will have Vbrakes.

Thanks

Easiest is a conversion kit to a normal wheel with a geared hub - Superstar Components do a nice but inexpensive set of spacers. Let me know if you want cogs, I've a few in the toolbox.

Otherwise for high-end stuff have a look at a Phil Wood Kiss-Off hub and White Industries freewheel. I've done thousands of miles on WI freewheels, and the Kiss-Off is as smooth as new after two winters.

Thanks. Will that maintain freewheel? I don't want fixed gear.

Yes. A singlespeed Conversion kit is the simplest way, cog, spacers, and a chain tensioner.
Have a look at Planet X or ebay for some cheap kits.

In the end I found a 26" wheel with sturmy archer 3speed and drum brake. An x-rd3. I think brake has a short pull. The front will have v-brakes. Will I need to have mismatched brake levers? Or can I get short pull v-brakes?

I'd check if it is 135OLN, usually they are 120mm.

It will need a conventional road lever, but if you use Avid Speed Dial levers you can twirl the travel adjuster to the innermost setting and it will be OK (use on outermost setting for V).
