2006 Zaskar Fail

Many steel frames had a 10 year guarantee early 90s. The rise of aluminium brought a 2 year guarantee, but buyers started looking for more, so the guarantee period got longer.

As a rule, aluminum alloy frames don't have an endurance limit, so are slowly fatiguing over time, whereas it's (technically) possible for a non- corroded steel or titanium frame to last for ever in normal use.

You could still be a long way off failure, but it could happen tomorrow🤔
blimey ! so next time i think about dropping off a curb i think i will get off and lower the bike down gently 😂

Unfortunately this is a lot of chuff and a bit of scare mongering

Warranty is only to cover for manufacturing defects, not the life expectancy of a material.

Aluminium will last a lifetime if its been manufactured properly, cast or extruded properly and joined properly.

If any of that has had a shortcut then, yes, it will fail.

There will have been race frames designed to last one or two seasons, many have survived extended use far beyond any designated time span.

That zaskar frame may simply have failed due to a crystal left over from the extrusion process. A bit of dampness, some internal corrosion and pop! All because it was under the paint or dirt and not very visible. That frame does look pretty manky

A lot of the older 7005 frames failed due to crystals in the aluminium after the extrusion process failed to squeeze them out. Some many frames with cracked head tubes. Then whacking in minutely oversized head cups and ping!

At the bike shop, failures were mostly through misuse, too long fork travel, jump bikes, crashes, titanium single speed used for commuting and so on.

My Comete failed from a design flaw, forcing tubing into cast lugs - continuous pressure over decades and ping! My Alan used a different method of joining tubes and is still out there

My early big fat tube generic Taiwanese frames are still quite happy. Many kleins are still ridden without worry. And I'd certainly be happy ragging around on my old Zaskar for as long as we are both able to
