2005 Specialized Allez E5 SLX

After finding a crack in the head tube of the only carbon bike I’ve ever owned, I was feeling a bit peeved. The frame, a rather nice Genesis Zero, was out of warranty and in any case I’d long lost the receipt. However, I did have a full Ultegra groupset set to transplant onto a new project.

I knew I wasn’t going to have another carbon frame, especially a used one, so I started looking at nice steel and aluminium stuff. Then this cropped into view.

Columbus tubing on a Specialized Allez? Surely some mistake? But apparently, on closer inspection it was Columbus Squadra Corse which is an alloy. I’m not usually a fan of Specialized but I’ve not seen many silver ones out and about.

Anyway, two days later it was in the garage and I was well chuffed. Considering it was a 2005 frame it was looking modern-ish cutaway seat tube. The bloke I bought it from said the guy before him had imported it from America. Who knows?

Anyway, very pleased with final results.

I've had two of these over the years, the Columbus tubing really makes for a lively and comfortable ride. I paired mine up with a pair of Time Carbon field and it was a really zippy bike 👍😎

Excellent. I have some relatively period-correct ITM Vista carbon forks which I might try out, depending how the current ones fare.

Did you have the silver version or the red livery of the Allez?
