2 2003 Kuwahara Savages - For Free!

Just picked these up an hour ago. One's 20", the other 16". 18-speed. Kuwahara KW front suspension. Along brakes. Looks to be all original. My son gets the 20" to commute to university. My youngest daughter, who helped me load them into our wagon, gets the smaller one. They in good shape. All gears work, brakes ok. Aluminum rims. Trying to date these - having trouble

Btw how do you thread the able into those shifters.

My canal rescue bike has then but I cannot see a obvious method?
