You could always screw in your front mech stop screws so that you can't shift out of the middle ring.
Riding your regular trails will tell you if 1 X 10 is for you or if you need a "bigger" cassette.

I struggle to spin out a 36x11 off road... To put it into perspective;

42x15 is an easier gear than 32x11

42x13 is roughly the same as 36x11

so if you're happy with those at your top end, then 1x could work for you.

Also, my 36x46 low gear is the SAME ratio as a 22x28.

So; my 36t x 11-46 is has the exact same spread of gears as your 22/32/42 x 11-28, except I lose your top 2 gears, that you (probably) very rarely use.



If you never use lower than 32x28, then a 36t x 11-32 would give you a VERY useable range of gears, based on what you've said. Shout if that doesn't make sense.

You have taken me back in the day i would work out the different gearing options. Hence why i rode 2 at the front. It's all coming back. :D
 
I'd still say with one chainring, you definitely want a less-than- 1/1 ratio on the lowest gear, so a biggest rear sprocket that's bigger than the chainring.
The old school 42-32-22 or 46-34-24 gave a granny gear of 22 or 24-28.
 
I have a 1X10 on my Whyte PRST4 with 32T front and Sunrace 11-42 rear. It's great for local trails and we have some steep stuff. Around my local "mini trail centre" it's perfect. I took it on a road ride and found it was undergeared for a surprising amount of the ride. I just had to tuck on downhills.
 
Went out and used only the 32. What a blast. So will go 10 x 1. Have to buy new chainring bolts and shorten the chain.
