No, chain growth, how much does the measurement from Bottom bracket centre to hub centre change during the suspension travel? 1cm, 2cm? If its a lot, you nicely set up "correct" chain length could suddenly get too short at full travel, and rip your rear mech off (or do worse). SS mechs are (nominally) least tolerant to incorrect/changing chain length, 1x makes it worse.
FWIW my bike has around 9mm growth, so i don't really need to worry about it. My worst experience was setting up a customers bike which seemed to have near enough 5 cm growth (horrible high single pivot thing) was almost impossible to get the right length chain that would a) work in all gears and b) work in all gears with the suspension at full travel.

And i forgot that 10 speed only goes to 36, Zee SS rear mech should have plenty of capacity to cover that, unless you get a range extender (40 or 42 tooth sprocket) and modify your cassette.

And what size cassette and chainring you choose is completely up to you! (and where you live!)

being a horst link frame, im pretty sure there isnt much chain growth (and the travel on the rear shock is 1.5" i think) - but I could be wrong and will definitley look into that.

i have read about range extenders, but on an SLX cassette (which is what ive been looking at) i think you need to remove rivets?? - which i cant be arsed with.

i cant imagine i'd be getting 5cm growth on my setup. thats an awful lot!
was looking at 11-36t or 11-32t. will chat to a local mate whos riding on a similar set up to see what his range is like.
thanks for the info :D

Re:

FWIW I'm running 1x10 with a 32T Superstar NW and an SLX 11-36 cassette on a 2011 Pitch Pro - no real issues with chain growth (it's only ever going to be an issue in the largest sprocket, and as you'll only be using that for going uphill slowly, that's when the suspension is likely to compress the least!). I'm running a non-clutch X9 Carbon rear mech so have a chain cevice as extra security but I suspect I could probably do without it. Did a 4hr/50k ride round Afan yesterday and never needed a lower gear. Ok, so I walked the last fireroad climb, but that was to stretch my back/legs out; I could have ridden it... ;)

I'd be interested to see how you get on with this, as I've been thinking about swapping from 2x8 to 1x10 (or maybe 1x9) on my parkpre. Just because, I think. No real need to do it...

my main motivation for getting this is to rid myself of front mech faff on my FSR. that and it tidies up the cockpit somewhat, and i never use my granny ring, or big ring when im out on a ride :)
also, the n/w chain ring + clutched rear mech means i 'shouldn't' have to use a chain device......we'll see...

Re:

Not sure that I ride my FSR hard enough to be a shining example, but my 1 x 9 set up hasn't caused me any issues today on a pretty rough and up and down dale spread of terrain. 36T Middleburn ring, not ramped obviously, but not N/W either, and just a short cage ordinary XTR rear mech....

(As I think we've discussed before, I had never heard of any of this narrow/wide stuff and clutched rear mechs until very recently!)

I like the idea of a clutch rear mech, but think a standard mech with a bullet bros chain tensioner might work just fine :)

Will an XT M739 8 speed mech work with 9 speed shifters and cassette? and will a 9 speed chain work on a modern NW chainring?

Re:

I am running 1x9 with a 11-34 on the back with a 34 on the front on my Prince Albert.

Still have the granny ring there if I need it, but no shifter.

Haven't needed to use it so far, so even with my limited fitness and the hills here the lowest ratio works for most of what I could currently ride up anyway.

I would guess the 36 would cover 90% of what I need.

I just bought a 97 cannondale which was changed to a modern 1x10 set-up. zee shifter and slx the rest. It was used as a hybrid and on my first outing off road it only dropped the chain twice(glentress red route). Don't think the mech is clutched(or is it?) It's a long cage. Running 34 front and 11-36 on back and I didn't struggle on the ups. Reckon it only needs a n/w chain ring on the front and i'll be good. Having run previous bikes 1x8 or 1x9 I reckon 1x10 is all the gears you need off-road:)
