Your right .....We are all merely custodians (at best long term custodians)

I'm firmly in the 'bikes are meant to be ridden' camp & if that means a 1x drive train i'm happy with that. I am against any mods that result in structural changes.

In the process of building up my eldests old Kona Blast Deluxe for my younger lad. He doesn't get triples so I'm building it 1 x 9 with a 34T up front and a wide range ZTTO 11-40 cassette, this only about as heavy as the old Deore 11-34 but offers a good enough range for him. Should keep weight and complexity down. Going to convert his old Hahanna to 1 x 7 for my daughter and see how this goes for her. Shame you can't get a wide range 7s cassette.

What I'm going for that one, not a wide range really though in comparison to 11-40 in the 9's, which if used with a goatlink on a regular mech, should probably work OK on 7s range wise (Box get away with 11-50 on the Prime 9 9 speed), but as 7s is dead we'll likely never see anything like that so 34T low is the lowest i'll get there.

Carl.

Looked at those but for that I'd need to replace wheels and shifter too, might as well go 9 if I do that as Deore 9's shifters as excellent and dirt cheap as are most of the wheelsets. It was a popular and a long lived standard (still current at the bottom end of the market) so there's lots of parts that people upgraded from and it's not a total dead end as it can also take 11's cassettes too.
I haven't committed yet as I'll be spending the money from the sale of her Dawes academy 20 (should realise about £175 there as it's equivalent to a Frog/Squish 20), so I should have a budget of around £100 on parts after the repowder of the frame and forks. If I can get 9's Wheels, Cassette, goatlink and Shifter in under that I'll consider it.

What hub is it? I can send you a 8/9spd freehub body over if its Shimanooooo

I thought the 8/9 freehub needed a narrower hub body than 7 (I must admit I hadn't measured) to fit inside a standard 135 OLN dropout spacing?
