1999 Kona Explosif project.... with questions...

Mid life Kona

Dirt Disciple
Hi,

I've finally pulled my old 17" Explosif out of the shed and decided that it's time to build it. Although the frame is straight and free from any damage, cosmetically it has suffered over time, with the worst being the lower chain stays.

Does anyone know the colour code for the Grey that Kona used? I don't really want to get the whole frame powder  coated, as I was aiming to get it back on the trails with a realistic budget.... but we all know how that usually ends.

I also need the Reynolds tube decal, again, does anyone know where I could get one of those too?

It won't be a top end build, and definitely no bike of the month contender, but it will be a useable, enjoyable bike again.

Will a 2.2 tyre fit on a Mavic 717XC rim using a 2.1 - 2.5 tube?

Finally, how do I post images on here? All I get is file too big, too many pixels and then an error message!?!

Cheers in advance for your help, and I'll update the slow but hopefully steady progress as it happens.

Re:

853 tubing, nice !

2.2 tyres will be fine on those rims by the way. You should be ok for frame clearance too. I think.

Nice frame, not sure on paint code for it but here is the latest of many threads on picture resizing, with a few good suggestions viewtopic.php?f=8&t=404513

Thanks for that, because I don't want to admit to how long it took me to get those images up, from downloading apps, resizing and compressing, to find it doesn't work, to try again, and again.... to finally manage it, then to see them upside down.

If you're on your phone, just turn rotate off.... :D

Thanks! I have another, well a '98 sitting in the loft but it never gets used, as I think it's too good, so I wanted to build one that I will. I know that sounds a bit daft, like not putting miles on your car, but it's pretty much a catalogue bike, apart from I changed the seat post and fitted a Chris King headset years ago....

I was worried the tyres would look too big against the thin tubing, but I think they will suit the bike overall..

gil on here can supply the decals you need memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=10

Paint wise I recently contacted kona about paint codes and sadly they have only just started doing codes. in those days they just made up a colour similar to object they liked be it a car cup etc your best bet is to go to a car paintshop and get them to match it for you. some of the colours including my 1998 lava dome you cant get an exact match though as its a 3 stage paintjob like they do on hotrods etc

try imgur for your uploading of images

Contact Reynolds directly for a replacement sticker - they charge a fiver or thereabouts, but will ask you for a pic of your frame for verification.

Glad you’re not going full resto on the paint, those seat stays will come up fine with a bit of attention and the bike will wear it’s remaining scars with pride.
I’m the same, over-restore them and I no longer want to ride them in anger.
