1999/2000 era Orange P7 seat post size?

I have an Orange P7 from around 2000, Ive looked on the orange list for sizes but it says the frame should be shimmed. Could I get away with not using a shim? Or can someone tell me why the shim is needed and I will try to find one the right size with the correct post. Thanks

IIRC Orange standardized on posts (27.2) but used all kinds of different seat tubes across the range. For example, my 1996 P7 had a 26.4 post shimmed from 29.4.

However, treat with caution...my frame doesn't fit at all with what they say.

So no reason I cant run a larger post and not the shim. I wasnt sure if there was going to be some specific reason the shim was a must have.
