1998 Stumpy rigid fork advice

I'm awaiting delivery of a '98 Stumpjumper comp frame. I was thinking of fitting my Orange F7 rigid forks (year 2000/2001 I think)
The forks only have 395mm axle to crown measurement. Seems a bit low.
Both the p7, from which the forks derive, and the Stumpy came with 80mm travel suspension so would it be ok, geometry wise, to fit the F7 fork or should I really be looking for something with 420mm axle to crown?
your advice appreciated, thank you.

I'm using a Kona P2 (410mm) on a '98 Rockhopper, and it's fine. The original Specialized rigid fork that came with the bike measured 412mm axle-to-crown. I think your Orange fork will be a bit short, but there's no harm in trying.

Re:

cheers jim and harry

:( I agree 395 a2c will probably be too short, not helped by the fact it will be sporting road tyres- so even lower (does that make any difference if both tyres are the same?)

if I did try the F7's the bike would be too twitchy / fast steering? is that a bad thing? They're 17mm off.

It's certainly not easy finding the correct forks, I've searched everywhere, even down the back of the sofa...

I have some some sound but tatty Direct Drives with a 205mm steerer and approx 415mm A-C. If they are of interest I can confirm dimensions and take pictures etc.
