1998 Specialized Rockhopper

Re: 1998 Specialized Rockhopper Singlespeed

Little bit of progress...

Lacquered over the decals over Christmas and its been left to dry and harden since then...

Been over it with the rubbing compound to smooth out the surface and get rid of a few imperfections over the past couple of days..

Gave the shiny bits on the fork a bit of a buff with some Autosol and popped the headset in tonight..

Re: 1998 Specialized Rockhopper Singlespeed

The steel forks are still in the original Red.. i kinda like the silver Frame / Red forks too..!

they're the only bits left of the original bike.. it's bit of a triggers broom

The original 1997 Red Rockhopper frame was replaced under warranty in about 1999 after it snapped next to the Drive side Dropout..

Re:

the Final piece of the puzzle arrived today... so the bike is finally complete again..!

Better Pictures to follow at the weekend when i can take it somewhere slightly more scenic than the attic..

Love it, Spacehopper!

Seeing it fully repainted makes mine look tatty......

It looks great, especially as a single speed to.

Re: 1998 Specialized Rockhopper Singlespeed

How is the chain device working? Dont see many SS using that set up but no reason why not that I can tell?

Great job by the way.

Re:

thanks for the comments :D

First proper ride back should be this friday.. cant wait..!

The chain device works great..

It was basically a bodge.. well over ten years ago now...!! when i first went singlespeed on the hopper..

I decided to give singlespeeding a try... and I had an old MRP style chainguide in the spares box doing nothing..

I Needed a tensioner of some description.. so i cut down the chainguide.. mounted it.. and its been on there ever since..!

It works really well, is quiet and has loads of adjustment, both rotating the device around the BB and you can slide the roller up and down. and hasn't ever moved a mm in use.. i think i've only needed to change the bearings in the roller once too, about 2 years ago..

Ive also got a spare roller too from the top of the original guide but the current one looks exactly the same as the day i put it on despite ten years+ of riding through filth and general neglect..

Re: 1998 Specialized Rockhopper Singlespeed

Nice ride, cool thread too esp given the legs it has, 5 years is a good run!
Could you possibly pic the rear cog arrangement please?
I have a '98 as well that is about to get some treatment after I finish my '92
