Re:

I always enjoy your builds Nick.

Look forward to seeing how this one progresses.

Glad I wasn't the only one leaving the Gates ride wanting an Amp ......

to be fair Gerard has a fair few I'd like to own, that Amp especially but I'd have to polish the hell out of first !

After removing the front end today I had a quite a date with Mr Peek and re-found the sparkle

Handlebars were the first to get the treatment, before and after in one shot. found it easier to polish them still mounted on the bar but didn't want to remove/polish away any of the black Anno - hence the blue tape

and with the cleaned and polished CNC work attached

planning full on surgery tomorrow and going in for the kill on those elastomers.. I though Manitou II's needed a long allen key but these forks take things to a whole new level about 3 foot in length

Re:

De-constructive surgery completed

What a journey, they weren't that dissimilar to Judy's and Manitou II - almost a fusion of the two, BUT on Steroids

and I mean big

so big in fact, that the stanchion are far bigger than Judy lowers..

and going the other way a Judy Stanchion in the Voltec lower leg

and from another prospective "Little and Large"

and here's why the forks had collapsed - queue the usual biscuit crumbs and gooey lumps and since each leg has nine elastomers there's a lot of crummage to clear out.
The two white disc's signalled I'd reached rock bottom as they're the bottom out bumpers.

and here's the finished result, now awaiting the replacement elastomers :D

just realised you can see in the corner of the pic my make shift / Heath Robinson 3 lots of socket extensions I used in order to get at the allen bolt

Re:

Since the brakes and shifters had to be removed to work on the forks and I had a few hours spare today I set about giving them a clean and check over

The Brakes although in great shape cleaned up a treat when off the bike as your able to get into all the corners, whilst apart I noticed that both had had very subtle surgery in the past.

Owing to the fact the bike was originally purchased in France the brakes were set up Euro style and the lines had subsequently been swapped over - but only at the lever end which worked perfectly well but the front line had an ungainly curve on it as was connected to the r/h Piston not the left.

Anyway with my mis-ventures in home amputation  all my bikes have to run Euro/US style so the brake lines were swapped back,

and with it being a nice day I got the polish out and gave the frame some TLC,

not the warmest day we've had this year but check out the sky

despite my concerted effort(s) I just can't get either crank arms off  so for now they're staying put and being cleaned in situ,
I've since read a recent thread about applying heat and then using a puller so perhaps a job for the weekend

Re: Re:

Double post

Might as well make use of it. I did something very similar today. Built a bird table.

Re:

whilst I like cars...they know me well enough at work to know that I'd never buy a real Porsche as I spend all my pocket money on bikes

The elastomers from Suspension fork parts duly arrived…. :D

Well not strictly true what arrived was the obligatory card from Royal Mail advising the UK Boarder Agency were holding my parts to ransom until the VAT/import Duty was paid :(
Not un expected by never the less a P.I.T.A as it delays things by a day or two and involves a trip to the sorting office

Probably the most expensive re-fresh kit sold by S.F.P but when you get two bags busting at the seams I could see why it pushed the price northwards

20 x Compression and 8 x Rebound plus 2 packets of Jonny Snot

I’ve gone from a tub of greasy biscuit crumbs

To these bad boys, mounted on the skewer prior to final re-assembly and applying the grease and fitting the shaft in the fork leg, skinny one for rebound larger ones for compression

The forks now feel great and since they no longer sag the ride height for the bars has greatly increased, what did come as a surprise is when you compress them you sure can here the air rushing out of the small hole in each leg,
I've got Atmosphere balanced Pace forks but they're quiet as a church mouse wearing slippers, these sound like a blood hound having a good old sniff and snort every time they compress/rebound.

Although I'm not a heavy rider and not typically aggressive as far as drops or jumps go and prefer to ride over rather than plough through things I'm glad I went with Firm Elastomers, dunno what soft would be like other than disappointing but Firm is spot on just need to get and button things up now

Looking forward to riding them now and see what they properly feel like

my legs aren't up to that much either :D

in fact with your wheezing accompanied by my huffing 'n' puffing in conjunction with the forks making a noise somewhat like busted bellows we’ll sound like an advert for a heart attack or the backing sound to a low budget porn movie….

All we need is a Dutchman masquerading as a washing machine engineer with a big moustache and a horney Swedish housewife…

Darn
those voices in my head need to stop talking to me, or I need to stop listening
