Wanted 1997 deoreXT triple left gear/brake lever combo

Evening. I have a 1997 Pine Martin and needed to replace worn brake inners. I got the extra fat plastic coated inners and after a struggle got the front cable changed. 2 hours later I was still strugling with rear and had the brainwave of making life easier by removing the black plastic cover over barrel end. This enabled me to fit the barrel in its slot but my brute force and ignorance caused me to force out the plastic widget insert located above the barrel assembly never to be seen again, I noticed 2 small screws at end of brake lever and wondered if this means lever can come off and be replaced, If so would someone sell me one or even the black widget ? I do not have a camera or ability to take and post photos and I know this would help but I never learnt to take advantage of modern technology, Thanks for reading Colin
