acquired this 97 galaxy at the york cycle festival last year with very little idea what to do withy the old girl, resto, retromod, nowt, flip etc. anyways, today i finally took it from the storage hooks and gave it a once over and some air and rode it down the road a bit, all works but very tired and needing some love and polish etc.

initial plan is to strip it right down, clean it to an within an inch of its life, polish, scrub etc and rebuild it again. going to change the brakes to something more silver and change the stem to a more upright swan neck type for comfort. toying with the idea of full lx, brahma bars and thumbies as ive never really got on with drops but we shall see.

anyone led converted an old cateye?

chris

Tuning in... I've always wondered if a Dawes Galaxy had the potential to be my ultimate road bike, by shedding it of most of the weighty parts and adding some lightweight bling. Decent tyre clearance with mudguards, what's not to like

Pretty much my size, I think haha. Original bars are very narrow and awful. Stripped it this evening and cleaned the frame and fork, forks not in bad fettle but the scrubbing has shown quite alot of rust worming around the main frame and some flaking around the lugs, stripped the worst and nothing structural but toying with either getting it media blasted and resprayed British racing green which will maybe cost way more than the bikes worth, cleaning the worst, quick prep and respray, cleaning the worst and clear coating it for patina haha or...... giving up and moving it all on.......

I do like to be fettling in the workshop though

Yeah, everything is there and just needs cleaning and servicing. Typical stored and caked in oil, grease, crud and god knows what else haha, shame the tin worm is causing some headaches.

Supposed to enjoying riding them not just building them haha

Gonna clean all the other bits and see if I've enough spare rings as the rsx ones look quite worn.

Updates tomorrow

Before and after bells and whistles removed
