1996 Voodoo Wanga

Maybe I paid a bit much for this, but it is a 'Made in USA' Tange Prestige frame and these older ones don't come up all that often. What do you think?

The word Wanga is apparently Haitian Vodou terminology meaning 'charm, often as used for selfish or even malevolent ends'. And the word Voodoo is an Americanised/Hollywood mis-spelling of Vodou, which in case you didn't know is 'the predominant religion and cultural tradition of Haiti, derived primarily from amalgamated African and Native American traditions'.

Thanks Martin. Joe Murray tells me it was built in the same factory as the 1996/97 Kona Hots (and I assume Ku's also).

Now built, but no photos yet as Joe is sending me a head badge for it - will write up in due course if anybody interested.

I now understand Wanga to mean 'an object that has had a malevolent spell put upon it', so maybe I'll need a bit more skill to ride it than I have!

You'r welcome Anthony, looking foward seeing pics. of the frame from you with metal headbadge on.
Always fancy of a Wanga, I only managed to get me a D'Jab;)
Do you think Joe can help me with the production place& year of my frame, as I have no clue ?

I don't know whether I've seen your D'jab. Why don't you send me a picture of it, or a link? I might have some idea of the year. I'm sure Joe would know where it was built if we could establish when. I take it there isn't a giveaway in the serial number then? Mine is 96WA000263.

A D'jab is a powerful but wild spirit, which may have potential for both good and bad. But I guess you must have noticed that already.

Wow I never knew these were handmade in the states, who did actually weld this and the 96/97 hots then? My 97 hot had a strange goat-like stamp on the dropout :?

Well I certainly wouldn't have paid that for it Anthony...I would have paid more :D
Great buy...I'll be interested in how it rides

Well that is interesting, and a very nice poetic touch.

1996 and 97 Kona Hots and Kus were made by Altitude Cycles of Chico, California, a frame-building company set up by Jeff Lindsay alongside his existing Mountain Goat business, and using the same factory and welders. Hence your goat stamp, quite cool really.

The VooDoo Bizango, Wanga, Hoodoo, Bokor and Canzo were built and assembled by Altitude in Chico, while the Zobop, Erzulie and Bantu were made in Taiwan. That was up until c1999, when VooDoo went out of business for a while. When they returned c2002, all the frames were made in Taiwan.
