1996 Kona Kilauea

It’s been awhile but thought I should update this. The Kila has become my go to hardtail which is exactly what I hoped it would be. It’s such a great bike, here it is as of today:

I found a more suitable saddle in my spares (I forgot I had it!), I had to ditch the gripshift too. I’ve never really had them on a bike before and I just couldn’t get on with them, the Deore lx 3x8 shifters came off a bike which I split down for spares recently.
It did have a Sachs front mech but I’ve changed that for a M560 Deore lx one. The gears are completely dialled now.
I’ve swapped out the wheelset for the original XT rear and paired it with a parallax front (the original had a joytech hub which was worn out).
Biggest change is the bomber z2’s in place of the P2’s. I wanted to keep the curve canti’s which are super powerful if fiddly to setup and I had a Marzocchi canti cable hanger already so picked these forks up at a decent price via eBay.
I’m calling it good for now, just enjoying my after work/weekend rips on it!

Another small update, this bike has served me well over the summer but I’ve been out and treated myself to a 2022 Cinder Cone for hardtail duties.
I now use the Kilauea as my shopping fetching machine and for longer chilled rides. It now looks like this:

I switched back to the P2’s and installed a Girvin stem (this has a shorter, slightly higher reach). Ergo grips and my faithful Brooks B67 went on for practicality and comfort. This then lead to a Halfords rear rack and 60mm Blumels mudguards (awesome fit/finish). The pannier bags are Altura waxed canvas for an old school look (don’t think modern ones would have looked right). The only other change is a Hope ti-glide/suspension wheelset which I built up recently, they finish it off nicely.
The bike is so versatile - even with all the added kit it’s still a pleasure to ride.
