1996 GT Zaskar LE- how would you build it?

The limit screws won't change the fact you have 9 speed shifters and an 8sp cassette. The spacing between the cogs is different from 8-9 speed so you won't get very good shifting in various places on the rear.

If I'm wrong, someone will I'm sure be along to correct.

I don't see why you wouldn't just use a cassette that compliments the 9 speed set up the rest of the drive train is. It will be far easier and simpler.
 
And yes, a 9sp cassette will fit on m950 hubs. Shimano didn't change the hubs when they introduced m951/2/3.

Sram 9sp will fit shimano freehubs just fine.
 
Good evening all,

There have been some developments with this build over the last couple of weeks. I’ve managed to source a number of parts for it, namely:
Flite Titanium saddle (awaits delivery)
XT caged pedals
Re issue Panaracer Smoke/Dart tan walls (awaits delivery)
M950 skewers
M952 chainset, front and rear DR’s, BB and shifters
M950 V brakes, M950 Levers.
Control Tech Stem
And some very nice Mavic 217 Sunset rims, laced to M950 XTR Hubs, with an 8 speed M950 XTR cassette.

A couple of questions for you chaps:

Any suggestions on tools to purchase for removing the old Shimano Cartridge Bottom bracket and cranks (tapered spindle), and also for fitting the new m952 Octalink BB and cranks?

I have just noticed that the BB has a 116mm spindle, where as I’ve been told, and I’ve read that the Zaskar/M952 crankset should use a 112.5 spindle. (Newbie error I guess, and I should have double checked, although I did ask!) can I run the 116mm spindle, or will it be too long?

The BB came without any spacers. Do I need to use any in the Zaskar frame (73mm shell), if so what size and on what side?

Another piece of the puzzle arrived today. A very tidy Flite saddle.

I’m on the look out for a 73 x 112.5 M950 or M952 Bottom bracket if anyone has one stashed away? As far as I’m aware, they are both compatible with the M952 Crankset?

From memory a m950 doesn’t need any spacers but a M952 has a small one

116 will be a tiny bit wider 1.75mm each side and isn’t ideal but won’t cause any issues.

Both BB's need a spacer if fitted to 68mm shells,no spacer normally needed for 73 mm shells.The standard supplied spacer is around 3mm wide,although Shimano did produce other sizes,often needed when fitting e-type derailleurs.XTR had thick carbon mounting plates,XT/LX thinner steel.
Goes on the non drive side,but spacers can be used on either side in some cases in order to adjust the chainline.If you were to use a 108/118mm Shimano road octalink BB for example.Never done it personally but is possible on some setups.
