Scooped this 20” GT off eBay locally recently. Looks to be fairly original and complete, just neglected.

Got it stripped down already with not too much drama.
Rear hub is a silent clutch but the freehub is stuck so that will want looking at. Also the front hub is an alivio but I have a spare stx one so that’s a result. The rims are really nice Mavic, hopefully they’ll straighten out alright.
Will post updates as I go.

Very nice 👌 . I wish I had the knowledge to be able to do my own mechanical work . What’s your plans with it when your finished?

Thanks, I suppose ultimately I’ll offer it for sale once done as 20” may be a shade too big for me.
I like finding them and fixing them as much as I like riding them so whether I keep them or find them a new home I’m enjoying myself either way!

Good way of enjoying yourself 👍🏻
I was watching it on eBay as a 20 inch will suit me better than my 18.
When it’s done and if you decide it’s not for you please give me a shout . 👌

Rear wheel and hub stripped, the silent clutch had stuck completely (making this a ‘fixie’?), managed to free it off ok though.

Re-assembled and trued up a treat.

Next job will be to swap the stx hub I have on to the Mavic for the front. 👍

Ready, steady, build!

Front wheel assembled really well, most straightforward wheel build I’ve done - I must be getting better at it with practise!

I reckon these OG Wildgripper sprints from my spares cache suit the gold rims a treat.
Can’t wait to get stuck in to re-assembly now, lots of cleaning and polishing to do!

Got the clean up done and gave the frame a polish all over, then installed the forks before trying the wheels on it to see how it looks.
Was stoked with it so carried on the build today:

Everything else cleaned up and fitted up to a point where I can actually test ride it! Like many of the bikes I get - it was too far gone when I picked it up to even attempt to ride.
It will need a new bb and some fresh brake pads but it rides and shifts well, nice and light and not a bad fit considering the frame is a smidge big for my 5’10” self.
Overall it’s come up good, the frame is super straight but to be mint it’d want a wet sand and more polish and then fresh decals. I’m not going to go that far on this one, it’s presentable enough as it is for now.
Will order the parts needed and fit them and then put some miles on it and report back with a few more pics. 👌

Got this finished off today after waiting for the parts it needed. I also had to change out the brifters for separate brake and gear levers as the sti units were for canti’s.
Came out really well, probably needed more work than I was expecting but can’t complain with the finished result..
Will probably pop this one on the for sale section shortly as it is a smidge too big for me.

This looks amazing!! great build. I'm on the look out for a GT but I think I need more of an 18"/19" frame (I'm 5ft9) otherwise Id have been all over this! Hopefully your next build is a bit smaller.👍
