1995 (?) TREK Singletrack Matrix Mountain Bike (970 frame)

At the time of my purchasing the bike, I was told it cost £1,000 brand new hence it being quite expensive to buy second hand (it was then 16 months old) at £400.

Having had a look at old photos, the photos showed I was using my old CTC Silver Streak racing bike for Norwich 100 Century ride during June 1997 so I must have bought Trek 970 shortly afterwards & used it for the Norwich 100 Century ride in 1998, which means my Trek 970 must have been new during 1995 - 1996. :?

how heavy this bike? I'm looking for 16"-17" light frame bike at the moment.

It's a 16.5" & I'll have to find out the weight of the bike before getting back to you.

It might have been new in '95-96 if you mean "sitting on the display floor unused," but that bike's model year is 1992. By the mid-90s they weren't making the lugged MTB frames anymore---1993 was the last year for that.

Yep looks pretty similar to my Trek 950 from 91 / 92 which I paid £500 new out the shop, so doubt the 970 was double the price

I bought myself a 970 and the ex a 950 in April 1991. List price was £999 for the 970 and (I think) £750 for the 950, but I negotiated a price of £750 and £500 respectively.

I still have the 970 and it is original except for the pedals, saddle, headset bearings and rear wheel. It has XT brakes, shifters and rear derailler and DX hubs, chainset and front derailler. I didn't realise there was a market for retro mountain bikes, so may consider selling it as I've only kept it for sentimental reasons. It hasn't been used for years as I bought a Kona Muni Mula to replace it in 2000 and then replaced that with a Kona Plus Four Deluxe in 2008

The 950 had an LX groupset and a slightly different frame - still made in the US but with double butted tubing?

Do you have the photos for your 970? It would be great to compare your bike with mine to see what is original & what isn't on mine.
