In the mid 90′s Independent Fabrication struck up a sponsorship deal with Stonyfield Farm to promote their Organic Yogurt [sic]. Stonyfield started out with a few Jersey cows and a great-tasting yogurt recipe and since 1988 they’re been based in Londonderry, New Hampshire, where they remain to this day.
As part of the sponsorship deal, Indy Fab put together some very special team issue steel Deluxe bikes. They were boldly painted in the black on white pattern associated with Holstein cattle and even featured a pink bottom bracket region mimicking udders. A small number were made for customers in the same style, but were not team bikes. Lloyd Graves from the factory comments that the background to these unique IFs means that
only 10 in all were produced.
Anya Vasilis, a twenty-two year old native of Pittsburgh, PA, living and working as a bicycle mechanic in sunny Florida recently registered her cow bike on the Owners’ Club site. She tells us “I came across the Cow Bike almost accidentally on eBay and snagged it for just over five hundred dollars. I knew nothing of the bike’s history upon purchase, mostly just excited to find an IF XC bike in my size. Learning about its history has been fun and I enjoy riding it immensely”.
