1995 Explosif Eastbourne

Spent the last few weeks trying to get a very very stuck seatpost out, very very carefully. Now needing to use caustic soda. Only the front wheel, bar, saddle (ripped to bits) and front mech were original…oh and the seatpost. Slapped some bits on it to see/get it rolling.
Try gallium..
 
Never heard of Gallium so googled it, not sure i would use that it says here although it destroys aluminium it also attacks Steel and makes it very brittle.
Not sure i'd want that, you'd be riding along and that area would shatter, next thing your sitting on the back wheel or worse 😂

Just pay the Seatpost man or the other outfits that remove them for about £70. Less hassle and tears when it goes wrong on a decent paintwork frame.

I got two stuck posts out ever. The first was with caustic soda. Messy job. The last one I used plumbers pipe freeze, clamped it in a vice and rotatad the frame. Worked. The pipe freeze comes with an insulated wraparound jacket for about £20 if I recall. Good luck.

Would have tried the freeze…but I’m now down to the top of the seat tube so nothing to twist! I’m going to see how little I can poor in but with a higher concentration. Worked out the volume needed with 200mm of post still in the tube which is about 170ml. Not seen anyone do it but measuring or limiting the volume used

Too late unfortunately….i had a moment of optimism and thought the post wasn’t in much. Turns out when I cut the post it had an internal bracing which made it much harder and also was in about 200mm

He still does then I believe that’s been cut.

Im all for trying to do stuff yourself. I’ve removed quite a few by freezing them out. But sometimes it’s best to pay the guy who has the tooling to do it

Caustic does work. But it isn’t the miracle that many make it out to be. And you can bet you’ll damage the paint

I found a less concentrated solution worked the best. It seems a more gentle, longer reaction.
The higher concentration was way too aggressive, it was spitting and splatting all over the place.
I think it took 2/3 evenings of dosing, no paint damage at all.
