1994 Stumpjumper FS build questions

Good day,

having messed around with various road, cx and in-between builds over the years, I'm looking at my first retro mtb project. With a 94 Stumpy FS I got a frame to my liking, from the era I started riding offroad on an old rigid Peugeot. The thing is, this originally came with a suspension fork (FS -- front suspension? FSR was the fully apparently).

To keep things easy I'm pondering getting a rigid fork, for starters. What sort of axle-crown height would I be looking at?

I should have added that I'm not going for a period correct rebuild, but rather just a retro mtb with 2x10 drivetrain and cantis. Hope that's ok.

With that out of the way, I have to confess that I absolutely love the look of old Stumpy "double plate" fork crowns. This fork is the only remotely similar one I found, though. Do you think it would work geometry-wise, on the Stumpy?

Hey there. I had a first generation Stumpjumper FS. The FS stood for "Future Shock" which was the brand name of their version of a POS Rockshock. I think that fork had 50mm travel max so I'd buy an 80mm suspension corrected modern rigid fork or try to get a vintage Kona P2 from that era.

Cheers Torpedo. Found a double-crown fork for a steal, so I couldn't pass. Still looking for other options too, one of those segmented forks might be nice also, but On-One is perpetually out of stock. Want to keep it simple with a rigid front end.

Next question, about the seatpost. Can a 26.8 seat tube be milled to take a 27.2 post, or would that be stupid, dangerous, or both?

Original fork length should be around 410mm , I have one out in the shed if you want the exact measurement. I would not deviate from that as I think they nailed the handling.

Looks like I have to make up my mind between Kinesis Maxlight 400 and 425 then. Would prefer the looks of a segmented fork, though, but they are few and far between, at affordable rates.

You will be weakening the seat tube a lot, especially around the critical weld area. 26.8 seatposts are common enough especially secondhand.

Frame was delivered finally. Surprised to see it take a 1" headset, internets had me believe the 1994 Stumpjumper FS used the more modern standard, with the suspension fork and everything. Serial is 93M2071, colour 94 "dry green".

I think thats the last year of 1 inch headsets in steel stumpy and rockhopper .

I have a 94 M2 fs in silver green and that is 1 1/8th .

So I have steel seatpost and stem lined up now. Pondering a steel handlebar for consistency. Ebay has a few, but any recommendations (stainless/polished finish)?
